Introduction

When the gaming world got wind of AMF Xtreme Bowling 2006, many thought it was an elaborate joke. Perhaps, as a sadistic April Fool's prank? But no, this game was as real as that weird smell in your fridge you keep ignoring. With all the finesse of a bowling ball hitting a gutter ball, this title rolled onto the PlayStation 2 like a pizza delivery gone wrong, leaving us wondering if just maybe, we should have opted for bowling in the real world instead.

Gameplay

Let's dive into the mechanics, or lack thereof. One would think that a game centered around the riveting action of ten-pin bowling would at least nail the basics. Unfortunately, AMF Xtreme Bowling serves up a blend of simplicity and absurdity that's hard to digest. The controls offer suffocating constraint, drawing on the deepest parts of nostalgia to simulate the feeling of standing at a bowling alley-only without the smell of fried food and the sound of laughing kids. You guide your ball by using the analog stick to aim at the pins (or usually miss them), then you're offered a cookie-cutter power bar to adjust speed, as if you were deciding how hard you want to flop your fantastic new bowling ball onto the lane. Your competitors? Oh, they range from cartoonish, smiling mascots to generic bowlers that didn't make the cut for 'Bowling Champion 3000'. Multiplayer mode is a dubious delight-like sitting through a half-baked comedy you've seen too many times. The animations of bowlers throwing their balls lack any grace, akin to watching your grandma try to handle a smartphone. Strikes and spares are celebrated with cheesy fireworks footage, reminding you that the game is trying way too hard to inject excitement into a sport that is already built around high-fives and good-natured banter. And just for fun, let's not forget the overly-simplistic physics engine that makes balls behave as though they're rolling on a flat surface of slightly greasy cardboard. Good luck spinning your way to victory since physics and logic seem to have forgotten to show up for this game.

Graphics

Graphically, AMF Xtreme Bowling appears to be the byproduct of a rushed art class project. Character models are stiff and awkward, reminiscent of a sketch gone wrong set in the uncanny valley. The animations during gameplay are sluggish and repetitive. Perhaps they were going for a 90s retro style? However, it doesn't feel intentionally nostalgic-more like the developers got too carried away with Clip Art and glossy stickers. As for the bowling alley itself, imagine taking a look at a Jenny Craig menu but getting a Big Mac instead; it just doesn't match expectations. The lanes are as bland as your high school cafeteria's meatloaf, while the color palette tends to lean heavily on the vibrant shades of 'not-finished-yet'. Let's just say, if you were looking for breathtaking graphics, you'd be better off scrolling through your Instagram feed than loading up this game.

Conclusion

After enduring such a unique experience of both boredom and confusion, the final verdict on AMF Xtreme Bowling 2006 is clear: It's a gutter ball in every sense of the term. As tempting as it is to believe that this game would magically redeem bowling video games, it desperately fumbles the ball both in execution and design. With a paltry 30% rating on Metacritic, the critics have spoken loud and clear as if they were bowling fans protesting outside the development office while lobbing bowling balls toward the windows. If you need a game to fill time, you're better off finding an old VHS tape of bowling footage from the 80s. Save yourself-and your sanity-and opt for the real lanes, where you can hurl balls with a guiding hand, and let your friends laugh (or cringe) as you inevitably miss. Just remember, if you ever think of playing AMF Xtreme Bowling 2006, it's better to spend that time trying to throw a precise curve with the actual bowling ball in a real bowling alley, even if it risks your pride.
