Introduction

When Turtle Rock Studios first unveiled Evolve, you'd think they’d invented fire, pizza, or a cure for Monday mornings. It’s all about four Hunters versus one gigantic Monster in a battle for survival against an alien backdrop. So grab your jetpacks and get ready for some monster-hunting mayhem; just remember, the Monster gets a head start to give you a taste of defeat before the action even begins.

Gameplay

Evolve's asymmetrical gameplay sets four players as Hunters, trying to hunt down the one player controlling the Monster. With a more tactical approach than your average FPS, teamwork is crucial—after all, without good team communication, you might as well be trying to herd cats! Each Hunter has unique classes (Assault, Medic, Support, and Trapper), each with their own set of skills, so strategizing by picking the right combo is key to success. The Maps are beautifully crafted open-world environments which make tracking that slippery Monster thrilling—until it gets caught and eats you for a midnight snack. The Monster, meanwhile, can level up by eating the local wildlife. So, if you're looking for a fast food solution, Shear’s got it! Take that steakout to a whole new level and watch your foes turn into mere snacks to load up on experience points.

Graphics

Built using the CryEngine, the visuals are stunning. We’re talking lush alien landscapes, textures that feel almost real enough to touch (please don’t lick your TV screen), and lighting effects that’d make even a 10th grader in art class jealous. The monster designs are creative, with enemies that look like they crawled right out of a sci-fi horror film. If anything makes hunting and getting hunted at the same time exciting, it’s the eye-popping graphics. You may even want to take a few selfies as you gleefully stomp through alien quite the looks, your friends might just forget you’ve turned into an emotionless killer.

Conclusion

Evolve is a thrill ride that can easily serve as the perfect couch co-op experience or a group gaming session with friends. Its unique 4v1 gameplay dynamic is as refreshing as a cold can of soda on a hot day—perfect until you realize how often the pressure can push your friends to the edge of rage-quitting. While it had a fair amount of hype, with reactions spurred by a hefty amount of day-one DLC and a dwindling player-base, it still delivers a chaotic hunt that is loads of fun—if you can get into it while it lasts. Just be prepared to invest in the long haul before you become a master monster hunter rather than just food for the beasts. Wasn't that the dream for humanity all along? Eating fast food and becoming the monster? Well, the dream just became a virtual reality.
