Introduction

Who knew that a game about teleportation and monster blasting could have such an epic backstory? Enter Quake, the OG FPS that is as influential as it is chaotic. In this review, we dive into the quarters of its characters, the insanity of its environment, and the sheer joy of sending foes into pixelated oblivion. Grab your axe and let’s go!

Gameplay

The gameplay in Quake is the exhilarating dance of bullets, rockets, and nail guns that keeps gamers glued to their screens and their friends slightly annoyed at the constant yelling of 'Did you see that?' Taking on the role of the unnamed soldier (later revealed as Ranger), you must traverse through realms filled with monsters that look like they escaped from a nightmarish Dungeons & Dragons campaign exhibit. Your objective? Retrieve magical runes from monsters that could be cousins to Lovecraft’s nightmares. With each episode offering seven to eight levels, this game is like an all-you-can-eat buffet of monsters, secrets, and the occasional plunge into a lava pit. The single-player mode isn’t just about mindless shooting though. Players need to explore, solve simple puzzles, and, if you're lucky, stumble across secret levels that provide an ego boost like 'Hey, I found it all by myself!' And if it gets too hard? Well, fret not, for there’s a 'Nightmare' setting! And by all accounts, this level is so intense it should come with a back warning. Multiplayer mode screams competitive like your friend insisting they shot you first. Various options allow for co-op or the beloved free-for-all deathmatch, and yes, rocket jumping. If you haven't tried it yet, are you even gaming? Overall, Quake is equal parts shooting fest and puzzle-solving extravaganza. Sure, the plot may be as loose as a pair of granny's knickers, but the thrill of outsmarting hellish foes? Priceless.

Graphics

The graphics give a delightful nod to the 90s nostalgia while simultaneously cranking up modern remastered visuals. Times have changed, and the PS5 takes Quake’s original pixelated chaos and slathers it with a fresh coat of grime and high definition. The gothic and sci-fi combined designs make each level feel like a surreal mix of a heavy metal album cover and a Lovecraft-inspired fever dream. Lighting effects are improved, shadows pop, and the textures don’t look like something you'd find on a potato. One can’t forget that soundtrack, courtesy of Trent Reznor (yes, that Trent Reznor). It encapsulates the chaotic gameplay with ambient terror that sounds like someone is narrating your worst nightmares, only cooler. Sounds from the battles echo throughout the cavernous levels and play into the overall atmosphere of impending doom. If Quake were a movie, it would be that cult classic everyone raves about, you know, the one you pretend to have seen but really didn’t until last Friday night.

Conclusion

Summing up Quake on PS5 in mere words feels a bit like limiting a wild party to just water and crackers: it’s impossible. This game is a triumphant return for both nostalgia seekers and new players looking for a mix of chaos, thrill, and, dare I say, art. Although it has been showered in the shimmering paint of today’s graphics, its roots and character-rich story shine through magnificently. In a nutshell, Quake is a shimmery reminder of what FPS games can be. It boldly blends addictive gameplay with a chaotic narrative, making it hard not to fall in love with each monstrous encounter. So, whether you fancy diving into the past or simply wish to blow things up in glorious fashion, Quake is your ticket to ride. Just remember: aim for the head, not the ego!
