If you’ve ever wanted to frolic majestically through the wilderness as a fox while simultaneously wondering if the developers were trying to prank you with their controls, then welcome to Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition! This indie gem has arrived on the PS5 hoping to charm gamers with its aesthetics while sidestepping the usual pitfalls of engaging gameplay.
As a third-person adventure game, Spirit of the North has you assume the role of a cute, fluffy fox on a journey through a beautiful Nordic landscape. This isn't a tale filled with dialogue or deep, thought-provoking narrative — you won’t find any conversations like 'Hey, what’s up, Foxy?' here. Instead, you’re left to wander the serene world, guided solely by your furry instincts and some conveniently placed geometric shapes. Trust me, that's all the guidance you’ll get, so good luck if you’re directionally challenged. The gameplay is simple: explore, collect, and solve puzzles that often involve environmental manipulation. Puzzles range from 'Hey! Where does this stone go?' to 'Why can't I jump like the Olympic fox I feel I am inside?' The lack of tutorials provides that good ol’ sense of mystery, which translates to 'I’m never going to figure this out, am I?' Combine that with controls that often feel as precise as throwing a dart blindfolded, and you have a recipe for some, let's say, 'interesting' gaming moments. If being chased by a spirit seems to work for you, that's great! But don't go thinking it’s a 'smooth sailing from here' kind of game. No sir! Expect to see the restart screen more than your mom at dinner on Sunday.
Visually, Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition is undeniably pretty — like, ‘I-don’t-want-to-leave-this-Snapchat-filter’ pretty. Utilizing Unreal Engine 4, the landscapes are colorful and serene, with each location feeling like a picturesque postcard. You can almost hear the Instagram influencers preparing their captions for this scenery. The upgraded visuals on the PS5 promise an enhanced frame rate (who doesn’t love a smooth experience?) and improved loading times, which I guess means more time in the game and less waiting like a kid in line for a roller coaster. However, it isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. Besides the occasional glitch that could range from glitching through a wall to being trapped inside a tree, the graphics can sometimes lack polish. And by 'lack polish', I mean the character models look a bit like my first attempt at 3D modeling in high school. The scenery may shine but the character’s animations may need a few more dance lessons to really express their artistic potential. Overall, it's stunning but it's not the gaming equivalent of the Sistine Chapel, more like a hipster coffee shop mural that you nod at appreciatively.
Spirit of the North: Enhanced Edition is a beautifully visual experience with a unique premise that unfortunately gets let down by its gameplay mechanics. It’s like ordering a fancy meal only to discover you’re allergic to its key ingredient. Sure, it's artistic, and there's value to be found in its tranquility and exploration aspects. The soundtrack beautifully complements its visuals, but is that enough to excuse the finicky controls? If you’re looking for a laid-back adventure where you can chill, snap some screen captures for Instagram, and don’t mind dealing with precision issues that make your Wii Fit balance board feel like a Formula 1 steering wheel, then give it a shot. But if you’re after a gaming powerhouse, you might want to channel your energy into something less fluffy and more... well, effective. Would I recommend this? Maybe to that friend who just loves to collect pixels and enjoys their tea with a side of confusion.
