Remember Subnautica? The game that made gathering fish, resources, and anxiety over the ocean your new favorite pastime? Well, here comes its chilly expansion, Subnautica: Below Zero, ready to up the ante and see if you're really cut out for adventure or just looking for an excuse to scream at your TV. This time, you’re probing the depths of 4546B's ice-covered waters while freezing your butt off. Who needs a vacation in the tropics when you can freeze underwater instead?
This time around, you’re running around as Robin Ayou, a xenologist (which sounds fancy, but mostly just means you’re the one sourcing all the snacks for your aquatic travels) searching for your sister. The catch? She’s probably either eaten by a giant fish or is chilling out (literally) with some extraterrestrial beings. Basically, you collect resources, build stuff, and avoid being lunch for a leviathan. While exploring, you’ll upgrade your gadgets and gear, answer plot mysteries, and pray the fish people don't find you too appetizing. The gameplay is grounded in survival mechanics and, like college life, includes monitoring your health, hunger, thirst, and for some reason now, your body temperature. This seasonal survivor needs to stay warm on land, but thankfully the ocean has some really nice cooling effects to combat those hot-blooded, panic-inducing moments. The game doesn’t just take place underwater; there are also treacherous terrains above, meaning not being able to breathe in cold water won’t be your only worry now! Five different difficulty settings allow you to choose how much you want to suffer, from taking a leisurely stroll collecting fish (survival) to staring into the void of reality where death means death (hardcore), or just throwing caution to the wind with a creative escape from reality mode. No one will judge you for running away from existential dread through submerged biomes. Or will they?
Glorious seems almost an understatement for how Subnautica: Below Zero looks on the PS5. The graphics are so good I half-expected some whales to pop out of my screen to ask me for a cup of tea. Underwater scenes are vibrant, colorful, and give you that 'wow, nature is cool' feeling, tempered by the sheer terror of swimming with things that want you dead. The landscape changes from icy tundra to aqua depths where bioluminescent fish seem to wave you hello or possibly say goodbye; it’s hard to tell when the haptic feedback shakes your controller like you’re about to be swallowed. The visuals truly shine, making you wonder why you’re condoning ice-cold survival experiences instead of exploring the warmer beaches for your vacation.
Subnautica: Below Zero is effectively a delightful, chilly adventure wrapped around a survival game that will keep you coming back for more fishy humiliation. It expands on everything that made the first game beloved, throwing more mechanics and environmental challenges at you as you dive further into this watery grave. With excellent graphics, a mix of exhilarating gameplay, and genuinely engaging plot points, it has all the makings of oceanic chaos that you didn’t know you needed in your life. Just remember that there’s no thrill quite like realizing a giant frozen fish is hungry for your soul. So suit up, bring some virtual thermal socks, and dive headfirst into the icy madness – it’s worth every freeze-induced panic attack.
