Introduction

Ah, the classic horror of the woods! In a game where even the trees seem suspicious, 'Blair Witch' for the Nintendo Switch invites brave souls to embrace the spooky unknown. Developed by Bloober Team, famed for their psychological horror titles, this game promises to haunt your sleep while potentially backfiring your attempts at solving its puzzles. Strap on your flashlight and leash your emotional support dog (Bullet) because this forest is about to get real a-‘witch’-ing!

Gameplay

You step into the shoes of Ellis Lynch, a former cop plagued with the emotional baggage of bad decisions and snazzy PTSD. The story kicks off in 1996, two years after the original Blair Witch film, with Ellis on the hunt for a missing kid in the eerily shadowy Black Hills Forest. Gameplay involves a mix of exploration, time-bending cassette mechanics, and the finest canine companionship your Switch can deliver. Use your flashlight (which will surely run out of batteries at the worst time), the camcorder to manipulate time via spooky tapes, and your trusty pup Bullet to sniff out mysteries and threats. Where you’d think you'd just be wandering around, every nook and cranny is laden with items like wooden dolls that might just be cursing you, or photographs that tell fabled stories. Note that sometimes you might get so lost in the woods (don’t we all?), you'd think you were part of the movie! Oh, and that companion? Yeah, Bullet is a big deal. You have to maintain a good bond with him, or you, my friend, might just find yourself taking a slow, dark turn into the depths of despair. He'll bark to warn you or might just be flipping you off with those doggie eyes if you neglect him. You can give him commands, and he helps track scents, making him as crucial to your survival exploration as understanding that you shouldn’t pet every dog you see.

Graphics

Comparing the visuals on Switch to its heavier power siblings, it’s like enjoying a movie through binoculars that you stole from grandma's dusty attic. The graphics work decent enough within the handheld's limitations, creating an inherently eerie atmosphere that perfectly captures the haunting tones of the film—minus the 35mm grain and soul-crushing scares. Lighting is eerie, shadows ominous; at times, you might find yourself enamored with a beautiful mist swirling through the trees, only to suddenly question if that mist is alive. (Spoiler: It’s probably not.) The textures can be rough, but the strong art style masks much of the roughness like a poorly drawn scarecrow at a state fair. It gets the job done, causing your heart to race without needing a top-end graphics card. Plus, seeing the world from Ellis’s and Bullet’s perspectives adds depth, making you feel the void of dread as you stumble deeper into the forest’s nightmarish complexity.

Conclusion

Overall, 'Blair Witch' on the Nintendo Switch serves up a solid horror experience mixed with some solid dog-based companionship, but it stumbles in its gameplay mechanics at times. With a somewhat disorienting journey and a story that doesn't quite maintain its intrigue to the very end, it may leave some players feeling like they're running in circles. For the die-hard horror fans and people keen on psychological narratives, this would still be a good addition to your collection. Just keep in mind that you might not need a high-performance console to feel the fear — sometimes, all it takes is a light flickering in a tree-strewn forest and a pup that knows more than he’s letting on. Grab your flashlight, leash up Bullet, and maybe stock up on snacks, because there’s plenty of creepy woods to explore… as long as you don’t mind losing a few hours to bewilderment.
