Remember when video games meant jumping on mushrooms and battling flying turtles? Welcome back to that era with Disney Illusion Island, a valiant attempt at resurrecting the magic of platform gaming. Released for the Nintendo Switch on July 28, 2023, this new romp featuring our favorite Disney characters is very much a nostalgic throwback-just like microwavable pizzas and slap bracelets! Come join Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy as they rediscover adventure (and possibly a few existential crises) on Monoth Island.
Disney Illusion Island combines charm and whimsy, much like a delightful mix of cotton candy and confetti. Players have the option to choose one of four beloved characters (we won't tell you which one is the best, but it's clearly Donald). The game adopts a 2D side-scrolling approach, reminiscent of platformers from your childhood, but with a slight flavor of Metroidvania-style exploration. As you wander through various biomes, equipped with abilities like jumping, wall jumping, double jumping, and a special knack for avoiding combat (yes, you heard that right), you'll gather collectibles like Glimts and Tokuns. Who doesn't want shiny, floating balls of light? The plot kicks off when our beloved heroes are duped into searching for three stolen Tomes of Knowledge in the vast realms of Monoth Island instead of enjoying a peaceful picnic. After a series of perplexing puzzles and a mild level of chaos, you accumulate abilities necessary to rescue said magical tomes from the claws of villainy. The opponents-legitimate foes requiring tactical string-pulling rather than a conventional combat system-offer creative ways to engage with the environment, which is a refreshing diversion from button-mashing-weary gameplay.
If you thought you were going to play a vintage game with pixels and retro art, think again. Disney Illusion Island bursts onto your screen like a pixie dust explosion. The graphics can only be described as delightful, vivid, and bursting with color-similar to how the world feels after eating a sprightly amount of gummy bears! The character animations are smooth and slick, and the environments? Let's just say they look like they've been plucked straight out of a colorful, animated Disney film. Every zone is detailed and diverse, providing a sense of adventure and wonder. On top of that, the game boasts a surprisingly effective score that captures the essence of childhood nostalgia mixed with the whimsy associated with Disney.
Disney Illusion Island has anchors in tradition and a refreshing coat of modernity. It's a delightful romp fit for anyone willing to embrace their inner child and strut their stuff through whimsical jungles and magical mazes. With a score hovering around 7 for good reason, it doesn't redefine the platform genre but rather plays lovingly into it. You may not find the sharpest storytelling in here-good helps you know about those talking ducks and mice-but if you're looking for a perfect couch co-op activity or need something to worm your way out of that summer boredom, look no further. Grab your pals, select your Disney avatar of choice, and head out to save Monoth Island; it might just spark a little joy amidst the chaos of adulthood!
