Introduction

Welcome to Hell, and by Hell, I mean absolutely spectacular arenas filled with swarming demons and a whopping load of intense action. Doom Eternal, the sequel to the popular 2016 Doom reboot, has come to the Nintendo Switch! That's right, all the glory-killing, demon-slaying goodness that had us crying out for blood on other platforms is now available on the go. Pack your bags, grab your BFG, and let's dive into this pixelated hellscape!

Gameplay

The king of doom, Doom Slayer, is back and this time, he isn’t just scaring people—he’s scaring demons too! The game follows a deliciously chaotic structure that encourages players to be aggressive, much like a puppy who thinks it's always playtime. Weapons range from your basic shotgun to the more fabulous BFG 9000, and you better believe there's a chainsaw ready to carve up those hellish foes. The new 'push-forward combat' mechanic means if you’re not charging at demons with a battle cry that would make a Mountaineer proud, you’re doing it wrong. Want ammo? Kill a demon! Want health? You guessed it—kill a demon! It's the demon-versus-doom tactic that brings joy to any gamer who thrives on violence. You’ll experience a heightened sense of awareness as you juggle demons—literally! Different types of enemies demand unique strategies, or at the very least, shameless spamming of your arsenal until you find the right weapon for the job. Just when you think combat couldn't get more wild, jump-pads, wall-running, and combo moves create an experience that feels like a dance-off at a techno-rave, except that the stakes are life or death—and you’re also blind to the concept of personal space. Doom Eternal even introduces platforming sections. That’s right; when you’re not ripping demons apart, you’ll be shimmying between platforms over chasms of fire and lava like an Olympic athlete getting a workout in Hell's Gold Medal Chamber. Funny enough, this has polarized opinions among purists—"Who needs to jump around like a circus clown when there are demons to annihilate?" But honestly, if you’re not multitasking your way through demon-killing and jumping challenges, what did you even sign up for?

Graphics

Across the stunning and hellish landscapes, Doom Eternal showcases stylish graphics that’s like eye candy for those who feast on pixelated landscapes. The environments are richly detailed, and while the Switch version does make some compromises to keep up with frame rates, it's genuinely impressive to see all that glorious carnage rendered on a handheld device. Just don't expect the same level of detail you'll find on beefier consoles. You might say the Switch's graphics are like wearing an old pair of glasses compared to the crystal-clear vision on a PS5 or Xbox Series X. Is it still stunning? Absolutely! Can you enjoy ripping demons apart whether you’re on the subway or your couch? 100% yes! Besides, who doesn’t want some demon mayhem to liven up their mundane commute?

Conclusion

Doom Eternal on the Nintendo Switch is a bloody good time, merging brutal action with smooth controls (yes, even on a tiny controller). If you're still holding on to that last speck of humanity and need a break from your casual games, it’s time to suit up and join the Doom Slayer because it's time to conquer Hell once again. Overall, I’m tempted to give Doom Eternal a solid 8.5 out of 10, and whether you’re playing it on a big screen or your Switch while pretending to be productive at work, one thing is for sure: Someone’s going to have a bad day—and it's not going to be you. So, bring on the meat hooks and glory kills; let's rip and tear because it’s demon-slaying time!
