Welcome to ARY-26, the planet that has it all: alien creatures named after your exes, flora that could probably charge your phone, and terrain that's more colorful than your grandmother's quilt. This is *Journey to the Savage Planet*, a game that lets you explore a whimsical world while cleverly avoiding existential dread. It's like if Pikmin grew up, stopped being cute, and is now heavily sponsored by Kindred Aerospace, the esteemed 4th best interstellar exploration company.
In this first-person romp, you play as a newly minted employee of Kindred Aerospace. Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and you don't have much of a choice unless you plan to live on your mother's couch forever), is to explore the uncharted planet ARY-26 to see if it's suitable for human colonization. Spoiler alert: it's not. Your job consists of cataloguing alien lifeforms, which is basically a fancy way of saying you're the one who has to deal with the weird creatures that look like nightmares on steroids mixed with whatever you ate at 3 AM last night. You'll find the Pufferbirds, the Barfers, and the Floopsnoots. And trust me, each encounter brings new challenges-especially when said creatures inevitably decide they're more interested in making you their dinner than offering you a guided tour of their habitat. The gameplay revolves around crafting and upgrading equipment, such as jetpacks and grappling hooks-tools no intrepid space explorer should be without. You will need these gadgets to access hard-to-reach areas, or to avoid a particularly hungry looking Barfer. Some enemies can be defeated using your trusty laser gun or by quickly discovering if acid grenades actually work in real life (they don't). There's also a co-op mode for those who prefer to drag a friend into this chaos rather than go it alone.
Graphically, the game looks like an acid trip through a Saturday morning cartoon. Everything is bright, colorful, and a little bit odd-like that one person in the back of the party who can't stop quoting *The Office*. ARY-26 is beautifully designed, with surreal landscapes that are part gorgeous and part 'I really need to ask someone if this is safe to explore'. Think *Subnautica* meets *Space Jam*'s color palette, but without the risk of a Michael Jordan cameo. The alien designs are cleverly crafted to evoke a sense of wonder, horror, and an urge to scrub your hands with bleach after any direct contact (or indirect contact, knowing how video game hygiene works).
While *Journey to the Savage Planet* may not be the next *Elden Ring*, it certainly offers a delightful escape from reality into a pixelated paradise. The humor, vibrant world, and overall whimsical gameplay make it a charming experience-one that might just convince you that a career in interstellar exploration is the way to go. Just remember to pack some acid grenades, a solid internet connection for co-op shenanigans, and a healthy respect for the flora and fauna. After all, there's a reason Kindred Aerospace is only the 4th best.
