Introduction

Oh, Resident Evil 2! The game that takes me back to when I was just a wee one, scared of the dark corners of Raccoon City! This remake, which dropped in 2019 and got its shiny upgrade for the Xbox Series X/S in 2022, is proof that some things really do get better with age (like cheese, not so much that embarrassing haircut from middle school). It's a gorgeous love letter to the original classic — tension-soaked, gore-packed, and definitely not for the faint of heart.

Gameplay

Players can pick between the dashing rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy and the feisty Claire Redfield. Both have their own unique stories to tug at your heartstrings—well, mostly their screams will do that, but you get it. The gameplay has transitioned from awkward tank controls to a more fluid modern setup, equipped with aiming that's a little more forgiving than that of your ancestors. You'll scavenge for ammo and healing items like it's a yard sale gone horribly bad, while solving puzzles that make you question both your intellect and your sanity. One of the standout features is the fear-inducing presence of the Tyrant (a.k.a. 'Mr. X'), who just won't quit! Imagine the stress of trying to progress through each area while this muscle-bound zombie is following your every movement. You're trying to save the world, and he’s just trying to smash your face. And let's not even get started on the first encounter with the infamous Lickers—those creatures will seriously make you rethink choosing 'easy mode'. With multiple difficulty settings and a variety of unlockable modes, every playthrough feels fresh. “2nd Run” mode puts a spicy twist on the game by mixing item placement and story nuances while offering a new perspective. There's also a bonus mode known as 'Ghost Survivors', which answers the all-important question: what if certain characters met a less grimy fate? At that point, you might think, 'Great! Another character for me to let down!'

Graphics

Visually, the RE Engine makes this game the prom queen of the horror genre! The graphics are stunning, perfectly capturing both the eerie, dilapidated atmosphere of Raccoon City and the splashy gore that makes you question dinner plans for the next week. It’s photorealism at its finest; a testament to what Capcom has achieved post-2000. You'll forget that you're controlling polygons and just get lost in devastatingly stunning environments. And the lighting? Let’s just say you’ll feel the need to check under your bed for Lickers after dark.

Conclusion

Resident Evil 2 is more than just a tribute to its predecessor; it’s a benchmark for remakes everywhere. It successfully merges nostalgia with modern gaming sensibilities, and in the process, has managed to scare the pants off both newcomers and series veterans alike. Capcom has not only remade a game, they’ve crafted an experience that draws players back in time while keeping them on the edge of their seats. So grab your snacks, turn off the lights, and jump back into Raccoon City—if you dare! With its mastery in every aspect, this remake is sure to leave a dent in your heart (or a fistful of zombie flesh) and promises the thrill ride of a lifetime. Truly, a must-play for anyone over the age of 18 who can handle blissful, blood-curdling horror!
