Introduction

For those looking to step into an ever-evolving alien adventure, 'Ultros' serves up a piping hot dish of cosmic chaos. Imagine waking up in a spaceship called the Sarcophagus that’s been overgrown with plant life, where a demon named Ultros is just waiting to ruin everyone's day. Welcome to the world of 'Ultros,' where your ability to eat plants and defeat alien bosses is your primary survival skill. Bon appétit!

Gameplay

In 'Ultros,' players take on the role of a brave space traveler who wakes on a spaceship that, as it turns out, isn’t so hospitable. The goal? Prevent the demon named Ultros from waking up, which sounds easier than it is when surrounded by a bunch of extraterrestrial flora and fauna hell-bent on making your life miserable. The gameplay involves lots of platforming—because what’s a Metroidvania without a bit of jumping around? There are a slew of crazy psychedelic plants scattered throughout the ship, which can be consumed to boost your skills, because of course, getting nutrients from alien plants is a legitimate life choice. And fear not, the game features a time loop mechanic, allowing you to return to the beginning of your journey while keeping what you’ve learned, making it just like a long game of cosmic Groundhog Day, minus the catchy Bill Murray soundtrack. Players will grapple with a range of bizarre alien bosses, many of whom are utterly mad thanks to the time loop. Defeating these mini-skirmishes provides a wealth of power-ups, but only if your attack precision is on point. Dying—oh yes, you will—means you’ll head back to the last save point, but the runtime reset on skills makes returning to familiar areas feel fresh. A round of applause for the developers for making backtracking feel less like a chore and more like an opportunity for revenge against that tricky mini-boss you couldn’t beat on your first go.

Graphics

Visually, 'Ultros' is a kaleidoscope of colors and bizarre dream-like landscapes that will leave players thinking they’ve accidentally ingested some of those alien plants they keep chomping down on. The art style heavily evokes the works of renowned artists influenced by cosmic horror—a little sprinkle of H.P. Lovecraft and a hefty dose of fluid, organic designs give the Sarcophagus a uniquely unsettling beauty. From the lusciously detailed environments teeming with foliage to the intricate designs of the alien lifeforms, you could easily mistake some scenes as high art instead of video game graphics. Bravo to artist Niklas Åkerblad for dreaming this all up—or having some very interesting late-night pizza combinations.

Conclusion

In summary, 'Ultros' delivers a captivating journey through a beautifully crafted alien horror landscape, with gameplay that rewards skillful exploration and tasty plant munching. While some aspects may frustrate even the most seasoned gamers—such as combat that feels a touch too breezy at times or the occasional head-scratching on defeating bosses—those willing to engage with its weird mechanics will find a wealth of rewards. So throw on your space boots, grab a snack (hopefully not a sentient one), and prepare to dive into the quirky Metroidvania that is 'Ultros'. It's worth the endeavor, despite its quirks, earning it a solid score of 8 out of 10. Happy adventuring in another dimension, friends!
