Introduction

Madden NFL 09, the 20th annual installment of the ever-popular NFL franchise, lets you hurl virtual footballs into the wild unknown. It's as if the game developers took an ordinary football and infused it with enough digital heroism and excitement to make even your Grandma want to watch a game. But the burning question persists: Is it just another glorified roster update sent to lure your cash-dispensing fingers? Spoiler alert: probably.

Gameplay

The gameplay remains almost as familiar as your favorite pair of sweatpants. You can experience the ecstasy of touchdown victories or the pure agony of rage-quitting after yet another interception. Flip through countless modes, from one-on-one face-offs with your friends to a painstakingly detailed franchise mode that might just convince you there's a reason you should start treating your fantasy team with the seriousness it deserves. Don't forget the shiny new quarterback traits that supposedly make throwing the ball more strategic; they mostly mean throwing the ball while consuming snacks spills during the match. There's a mode called Madden IQ that's aimed at determining how good you are versus how little you actually know. This mode asks you a series of questions about football, and answering incorrectly will make you question your life decisions while pushing the 'Restart' button over and over.

Graphics

Blessed with slightly updated visuals over previous installments, Madden NFL 09 on PS2 has been hand-crafted by EA to make players look like lifelike mannequins that just escaped from a Halloween party. While you won't confuse it for a PS3 version, it holds up well enough for a console that's been the source of countless pizza stains and chair scuffs in living rooms everywhere. The player animations are good enough to get your players hopping around the field like excited puppies when they score. Plus, commentary from Tom Hammond and Cris Collinsworth could make even the most mundane plays sound like a life-and-death fight scene in an action movie-or so they would have you believe.

Conclusion

Bittersweet as a half-eaten cupcake left unattended after a party, Madden NFL 09 serves as a comfort tool for existing fans and a serviceable gateway for rookies. It's entertaining enough to draw your attention, but as the packaging glitters and shimmers, a light sheen of mediocrity lingers just beneath the surface. You can dive deep into socializing with friends and occasionally feeling like a football genius or you can skip it entirely if you prefer upgrading to the latest model because, let's face it, there will always be a new Madden just around the corner waiting to squeeze your wallet dry. So this installment may not be the game-changer we were hoping for, but hey, life is too short not to throw a virtual football every now and then.
