Introduction

In an age where gaming lore goes deeper than the Mariana Trench, we find ourselves transported back to 1989, where heroes wore armor that looked suspiciously like they robbed it from an 80s disco. Enter 'Astyanax,' a game that's part mythological romp, part nostalgic trip, and fully ridiculous. Forgotten by many, yet oddly charming, it's like finding that old mixtape in your mom's attic-seriously, don't judge me for my love of cheese metal.

Gameplay

The gameplay splits into two zones: the arcade original and the NES iteration. The arcade version is a wild ride through fantasy lands filled with demons, palely-dressed warriors, and jumping. You control Roche, who's basically the poster child for spikey-haired heroes, swinging an axe that's less of a tool and more of a magical appendage known as 'the Fire Axe.' As the name suggests, it's hot-literally. Beware, swinging the thing around endlessly fills a power gauge that can -get this- light your axe on fire. This grants you varying degrees of slaughtering efficiency, and we all know that's what gaming is really about: chopping through baddies like they owe you money. You're traversing through six stages that go from wooded areas thick with monsters, through caves that scream 'danger,' to an actual castle. Yes, all classic fantasy tropes are here, and no, there aren't any modern conveniences like GPS or smartphones telling you to 'recalculate.' You rely on good old-fashioned trial and error (mostly error). In multiplayer mode, bring a friend who's just as bad at games as you. You'll be swapping lives without a clue how to defeat the stage bosses that ask for your best logic to decipher their weakness... spoiler alert: it's usually just 'hit them until they die.' The NES version decides to be a bit of a diva by going single-player only and handing you a completely different story where you're renamed Astyanax (fancy that) and have to deal with some peculiar magical shenanigans, like changing weapons mid-fight. Who knew a fantasy student from high school could wield an axe AND change it into a spear? Talk about range.

Graphics

Picture this: pixel art so vibrant it practically jumps out of the screen, and if you squint hard enough, you might mistake it for fancy modern graphics-if your monitor is really old. The character designs are charmingly goofy; think of them as slightly-off-brand versions of ancient Greek warriors, giving you the appearance of fighting in a budget cosplay show after hours. Despite its simple, blocky design, there's a fun complexity to the backgrounds as you traverse through stages that feel, well, 'hand-painted by someone who enjoyed too much coffee.' It gives off that joyful vibe only retro 80s and 90s games can muster-bright colors, spunky sprites, and an almost comforting reality that you're going to need several continues to get through. The animations are smooth enough to carry you through the many jumps and attacks, and while the fluidity isn't winning any awards today, it still sure beats lagging gameplay and pixelated nightmares of the early 3D era. 'Astyanax' doesn't strive for hyper-realism; it merely aims to be fun and silly, which it does commendably.

Conclusion

In a gaming world saturated with gritty reboots, realistic graphics, and existential crises, 'Astyanax' stands as a throwback to simpler times when saving princesses from evil wizards was the height of heroism. Sure, you could criticize its logic, or lack thereof, and question the depth of the story that involves being called forth from some alternate dimension, but why ruin the fun? When the worst problem you face is hitting continue for the umpteenth time, maybe it's your retro game mind taking delight in these moments. If you're looking for a laugh, a quick nostalgia trip, or just a game to play that doesn't require a 10-hour tutorial, then this quirky sword-and-axe adventure is well worth a try. It might momentarily whisk you away to a land of absurdity and pixelated fantasy. Ultimately, 'Arcade Archives: The Astyanax' earns a respectable 7. It won't change your life, but it'll let you change weapons creatively, which might just be enough for you.
