Cuphead, the game you've seen everyone play and die in repeatedly on Twitch, is finally here for PlayStation 4. It's a run-and-gun game that looks like it was yanked straight out of a 1930s cartoon, and yes, it's just as difficult as it looks. In fact, by the end of this review, you might just want to break your controller - or at the very least, shed a tear over it.
Gameplay consists primarily of dainty little encounters with numerous bosses who, let's be honest, need therapy but instead opted for a life of crime. You control our heroes, Cuphead and Mugman, who are on a mission after losing a bet to the Devil. Seriously, who gambles their souls away? Anyway, you shoot, dodge, and dodge again - mostly because dodging is how you stay alive. From flying potato heads to vengeful onion tears, each boss fight is a meticulously crafted bullet-hell scenario that feels like ballet... if ballet was designed by someone who hated those involved. There are also run-and-gun levels sprinkled throughout, which serve as breather moments-if you consider facing waves of enemies a breather.
Graphically, Cuphead is like a fever dream you had after watching too many classic cartoons with a double-shot espresso. The hand-drawn animations are stunning, each movement exuding personality, making you genuinely care about the characters, even if they're grotesque demon baby heads. Every background looks like it could be a painting hanging in a hipster gallery-perfectly imperfect, right down to the crude imperfections intentionally left in. It's a visual feast that makes you want to stare, which, ironically, might get you killed during gameplay.
Cuphead is a beautiful, brutal, nostalgic masterpiece. It's an homage to a bygone era that manages to remain relevant in the 21st century. The only complaints stem from its outrageous difficulty, which frankly, could cause you to question your life choices-like, why didn't I just pick a nice puzzle game instead? But really, who wants to play Candy Crush when you can wage war against a cartoonish array of the bizarre? If you're brave enough to take on the challenge and appreciate artistry and creativity in gaming, Cuphead is the game for you. Just don't forget to breathe... and maybe keep a spare controller handy.
