Welcome to the world of Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, where heroes are called to arms and by 'heroes' I mean you, the player, and by 'arms,' well, just assume that’s a sword or something cool you picked up after defeating a giant lizard. The second expansion of the beloved MMORPG delivers a flood of new content, storylines and characters that will have you riveted, both in joy and possibly anger (if that S-ranked boss decides to wipe your party mid-raid).
The gameplay is familiar to anyone who has taken part in an RPG before. You’ll slay monsters, collect loot, and collect five different types of shiny rocks from your distant aunt who you only met at family gatherings. This is all made possible through a slick combat system redesigned for a swifter and smoother experience, because let’s face it, in today's fast-paced world, who has time for clunky mechanics? With a new level cap of 70, two new jobs (Red Mage and Samurai) and countless new dungeons packed with shiny loot, there's plenty to keep you busy. Added along is the Player vs Player (PvP) mode called Rival Wings – think epic turf wars but with less street cred and more goblins.
Eorzea has never looked better! If the original game was a watered-down soda, Stormblood is the artisanal craft soda you’d actually pay for. The graphics are vibrant, the new areas feel lived-in, and swimming is a real thing now, although it’s a shame most of us will only be splashing in the shallow end. Each new area has its own unique aesthetic that beautifully portrays the cultures they draw inspiration from, be it from Asian traditions or through flashy flying lizard creatures.
Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood is a formidable chapter in the Final Fantasy saga, continuing to build on its predecessor and making a worthy investment for both veterans and newcomers. With a compelling storyline, enhanced gameplay dynamics, and stunning visuals, it’s hard not to get pulled into the drama. No matter if you play for the narrative, the social aspect, or just to show off your new armor, there’s more than enough content here to suck your time faster than a vampire at a blood bank. So grab your controllers, prepare your best party, and embark on an adventure that’s guaranteed to give you all the feels – including rage as you inevitably wipe on that last boss again!
