Introduction

Jumanji: The Video Game attempts to bring the dice-rolling chaos of the beloved franchise to life on your console. Adapted from 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' and 'Jumanji: The Next Level', the game puts you in the shoes of various characters who must endure the perils of a game that's probably more dangerous than your last Tinder date. Let's dive into this jungle of digital entertainment and see if it's worth swapping your couch for a virtual adventure.

Gameplay

This action-adventure game combines platforming with combat and puzzle-solving. You can choose to jump in as one of the four avatars: Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Ruby Roundhouse, Franklin Finbar, or Professor Sheldon Oberon. The goal? Complete missions and challenges while fighting enemies ranging from jungle creatures to other players who have also clearly missed their social interaction during lockdown. The gameplay is relatively straight-forward: you complete quests, rescue lost animals, and... uh, that's pretty much it. There's a heavy reliance on collect-a-thons. Collect coins, collect items, collect broken dreams - okay, maybe just the first two. The quests vary; sometimes you'll be tasked with collecting items or defeating enemies, while other times you might just need to survive as the jungle pulls all sorts of nonsense on you. The game supports multiplayer, which is essential to its fun factor. Trust me, you'll want to drag friends into this chaotic world; otherwise, you might start questioning your life decisions sitting alone in front of this quirky game. While the controls are pretty intuitive, they can feel a bit clunky at times. Particularly during frantic moments when timing is crucial, your character might decide that jumping into a pit is the best idea ever. Fun fact: it's usually not. Combat is simple, but satisfying. You can pull off combos that will make you feel like a jungle warrior - or at least give your friends something to laugh about when you repeatedly miss your target. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the game is the co-op experience. Playing with friends brings laughter and the occasional rage-quits, which is precisely what you want from a video game. But if you feel like going all lone wolf, you can tackle missions solo. Just don't expect to survive the jungle without a little help from your friends - or some sort of game-breaking cheat code.

Graphics

Graphically speaking, Jumanji: The Video Game doesn't exactly push the envelope in terms of visuals. It's like a decent meal from the microwave: it's not quite gourmet, but it'll do. The character models are cartoony and fairly well designed, channeling a solid 'family friendly' vibe. Environments, while colorful and immersive, sometimes feel a tad bland and repetitive. You'll be scampering through jungles, swamps, and ruins, but don't expect the breathtaking vistas you'd find in more advanced titles. Given that it was released on the PS4, one might expect more given the graphical capabilities, but it's easy to keep perspective. It's fun. It's not going to win any graphic awards, but it also won't leave you feeling like your eyes are bleeding. The animations are decent during combat and exploration but can occasionally get a bit bizarre. One minute you feel like you're playing an adventure game, the next you feel like your character has slipped into a reality where gravity either doesn't exist, or the laws of physics have just decided to take a vacation. Overall, it's functional, and while it's not the best-looking game out there, it matches the tone of the Jumanji franchise effectively enough.

Conclusion

Jumanji: The Video Game is an entertaining distraction if you're playing with friends, but is it destined to be a classic? Probably not. It's got some fun moments and captures the lively spirit of the franchise, even if it's not offering an epic narrative or advanced gameplay mechanics. It's like that goofy buddy you keep around for a good laugh but probably wouldn't want to rely on for your survival in the wild. If you're down for some light-hearted fun filled with puzzles, random jungle hazards, and co-op chaos, then grab your friends, roll the dice, and dive in! If you're expecting the next big blockbuster or something that will shake the gaming world, you might want to give this one a pass on your gaming list.
