Welcome to the land of Far Far Away, where you get to witness a chaotic brawl featuring your favorite ogre and his oddly lovable companions. In 'Shrek SuperSlam' for the Nintendo DS, players can dive into the rollicking world of Shrek, complete with enough slapstick humor and absurdity to make a woodchuck chuck a wood if it could. Don't worry, you won't need to deal with any pesky fairy tales, just good ol' fashioned brawling! Hop to it, and let's see if this fairy tale fight is worth your time (and your thumbs).
The brawling action awaits as you step into the shoes of Shrek, Donkey, or any of the fairytale misfits. You can throw down with up to four players in various modes such as 'Melee', 'King of the Hill', and the uniquely dubbed 'Slammageddon'. In 'Melee', you're tasked with racking up slam points faster than a malfunctioning printer spits out paper. In 'King of the Hill', balance your way to glory atop the hill while dodging attacks from your fellow combatants. Just remember-getting knocked off is humiliating, but not as embarrassing as being the one to slip on a banana peel. 'Slammageddon' is every man for himself; one hit is one slam. It's like dodgeball but with more grunting and less dodging. Each character has a unique combination of special moves and abilities, like Shrek's flatulent 'Green Storm', which is basically a flying pig to the nose of your opponent-trust me, you'll want to use it. Or you could opt for Robin Hood's 'Arrow Swarm' which deploys arrows faster than a panic-stricken hen at a rain dance. Mastering the different characters' abilities takes practice, but practice is just a good reason to shout at your friends while they stomp on your digital dreams.
Graphics are deceptively charming, capturing the essence of the Shrek franchise without resorting to ugly faces. Expect characters that look better than last week's pizza leftovers, albeit limited by the technical capabilities of the Nintendo DS. Character models are reasonably recognizable, though the environments feel as though they were made by dwarves on a budget-sounds less like a compliment and more like a "you get what you pay for" situation. The color palette sings with liveliness, although the details can feel a bit washed out, like an overcooked stew. Still, it's hard to be too demanding when your main character is a green giant who farts his way to victory.
'Shrek SuperSlam' is a mixed bag that provides harmless entertainment in exchange for a few hours of gaming bliss. Sure, it won't win any awards for the next Best Fighting Game of the Year, but it manages to deliver enough goofy fun to keep a group of friends chuckling while playing. Expect the fun to dwindle after a while, because after all, a ogre can only slap so many fairytale creatures in one sitting. If you're a dedicated fan of Shrek, a casual gamer, or you just want to spend some time making your friends question their life choices, you can certainly give 'Shrek SuperSlam' a whirl. Just keep a nose plug handy; you might need it after Shrek demonstrates what makes him the King of Flatulence!
