Introduction

Welcome to the dazzling world of Jotun: Valhalla Edition where you're not just a Viking - you're an oversized axe-flinging spirit destined to make gods question their life choices! Grab your Switch and get ready to explore a hand-drawn universe where giants roam, and puzzle-solving is just as important as dishing out axe justice. There's plenty of Norse mythology, epic boss battles, and health-pumping apples that make a trip to Valhalla seem like a rather enticing prospect.

Gameplay

Picture this: you're Thora, a recently deceased Viking woman, who has claimed her spot in Ginnungagap (fancy word alert!), a void where the afterlife starts. Big O, aka Odin, tells you to go beat up giants to earn your place in Valhalla. Just do it, okay? The gameplay focuses on exploration and some light puzzle-solving, but trust me, it's a lot harder than figuring out your S.O.'s favorite movie. You swing your axe (with the grace of a lumberjack getting pumped for a company barbecue) to interact with the environment: getting those pesky vines out of your way or swinging apples into your gut to increase your health! Combat is as simple as your uncle's dad jokes, with heavy and light attacks along with a cool dodge roll that makes you feel like the Viking badass you were destined to be. You also get God Powers, like Frigg's Healing and Thor's Hammer, which sound great on paper, but watch out! They become less effective if you don't manage them properly. No pressure, just the fate of your Viking glory on your shoulders! There are five areas to conquer, each containing two stages (except for poor Jera, who only gets one). After collecting runes from each area, you're off to the boss battle with a giant elemental. It's like Pokémon, but instead of cute critters, you're squaring off against massive beings that could easily use you as a toothpick. Each boss fight is thrilling, requiring strategy and a dash of brute force.

Graphics

Prepare your eyeballs for an art style that looks like every artist in the world had a collective dream about Norse mythology and decided to put it on display. Jotun is a hand-drawn masterpiece, and if you ever imagined what a painting might look like if it came to life, this is it! The colors pop brighter than your future at prom, and the GIGANTIC bosses, oh boy! Watching them stomp around as they attempt to squash you is both terrifying and awe-inspiring. The backdrops are intricately designed and while playing, I swore a few times I could hear the brush strokes. Even the Switch manages to keep all this eye candy without having a heart attack.

Conclusion

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is a must-play for anyone who loves a blend of mythology, beautiful art, and puzzle-solving wrapped in a compelling narrative. It's like taking a class on Norse mythology but way more fun and you get to wield an axe. Even if you're not typically one for exploration games, the combination of stunning visuals and engaging gameplay is enticing enough to turn you into a Viking-believer in no time. Plus, you'll get to tell all your gamer friends that you've vanquished five giants and made it to Valhalla! Or at least you can brag enough to cover for that time you spent two hours trying to bypass a puzzle. Grab your Switch, dive in, and try not to put down the axe unless you're planning to show it off at your next barbecue!
