Introduction

Thymesia is basically what happens when the creators of Dark Souls have a little too much caffeine and decide to throw a plague party that only you can crash. It’s a stylish action RPG that asks players to take on the role of Corvus, a mysterious plague doctor wearing a feather cape and mask, while he dances around monsters trying to recover his lost memories– a task easier said than done. How challenging can facing off against grotesque, plague-infested creatures be? Well, if you think it’s easy, you might want to reconsider that assumption because this game is like your ex: it makes you question your every move and leaves you feeling raw.

Gameplay

In Thymesia, players can expect a combat system that’s about as forgiving as a very strict teacher. The mechanics borrow heavily from the Souls series but throw in an interesting touch: plague abilities. Yes, you heard that right. Corvus can morph his weapons using diseases he’s absorbed, which means you can literally use your enemies' own misfortunes against them. Think of it as a less sanitary version of being a pint-sized superhero. The game’s locations will vary between eerily beautiful and damn terrifying. From crumbling castles to plague-infested streets, you’ll spend most of your gaming time stomping around while keeping your eyes peeled for hidden enemies and deadly traps. But don’t stress too much, as dodging enemy attacks is crucial. Timing your runs, jumps, and dodges will be your bread and butter; failing at those is what we call "getting prepped for an early grave.” Combat is fast-paced and intuitive, but don’t be fooled: there’s a martial ballet to master. Enemies will attack in ways that will have you weeping for your poor gaming soul, and think twice before you spam the dodge button; there’s a rhythm to it that feels right once you get it down. You’ll also learn that it’s best to study your foes' moves like you’re cramming for the final exam you didn’t plan for. Erm… and let’s not forget about the game’s most delightful addition—an extensive skill tree! And by extensive, I really mean it; it caters to every playstyle imaginable. Want to be a glass cannon or play it safe? Pick your poison. Just hope you have enough experience points because dying repeatedly will set back your plans… significantly.

Graphics

Thymesia runs on Unreal Engine 4, and oh boy, does it look sharp! You’re greeted with visuals that swing between hauntingly beautiful and grotesquely fascinating. Imagine the harrowing elements of a gothic horror novel fused with the slick graphics of modern action games, and you’re halfway there. Each location is uniquely designed, begging to be explored (despite what lurks within). Meanwhile, Corvus looks like something ripped right out of a high-fashion plague doctor runway show. While the graphics might not break the mold in terms of innovation or creativity, the art style itself is a standout, offering a unique aesthetic that draws you into this chaotic world. Just don’t forget to take the occasional breather; staring at the grotesque creatures for too long can result in nightmares.

Conclusion

Thymesia is essentially a challenging dance through undead nightmares. Action RPG enthusiasts, especially those who’ve cut their teeth on the Souls series, can find plenty of enjoyment in this title, if they can keep their blood pressure in check related to the frequent deaths. It’s loaded with skill-based gameplay that rewards patience. The motivation to push through each tough spot is there, yet it can sometimes feel excessively punishing. Still, the unique plague mechanics and the satisfaction of mastering its challenges help to make this a worthy addition to the genre. In summary, if you’re up for a challenge that tests your reflexes and sanity, give this one a whirl. If nothing else, your friends will appreciate a laugh as you yell in frustration while battling a particularly crafty plague monster. Thymesia won't hold your hand, but I guess you didn’t want it to anyway, right? Enjoy your journey through plague-infested chaos—just be sure to keep some antacids handy.
