Put on your skates and grab your sticks because NHL 06 is hitting the ice! Developed by EA Canada and released in 2005, this gem of a game attempts to capture the fast-paced, thrilling world of ice hockey while making us chuckle at all the falling players. Grab your controllers, friends; let's find out if this game is a hat trick or a missed shot.
You start off like any good sports game-you're asked to pick your favorite team, which, spoiler alert, is extremely hard to do if you're of the mind where all teams deserve to be praised equally. Once you've made the painful choice, it's time to head onto the ice and showcase your skills, or lack thereof, in this hockey extravaganza. NHL 06 boasts a relatively fluid gameplay system that allows players to execute dekes, wrist shots, and some complicated flick shots that would make Wayne Gretzky jealous (or just confused). But here's where the fun begins. The game introduces the 'Skill Stick' mechanic, which will be your best friend or your arch-nemesis. It's based on the right analog stick and if you've decided to ignore instructions, good luck figuring out just how to score that go-ahead goal while your friends mock you from the couch. Mastery comes with practice, so you might want to refrain from throwing the controller if you find yourself wallowing in shame instead of glorious victory. Each match has a different flow depending on the teams, so if you've picked a powerhouse like the Detroit Red Wings, expect a tad more domination than if you're playing as the underdog Phoenix Coyotes. Oh, and yes, this game has fights-lots of them! Just make sure your timing is on point; otherwise, you might end up sitting in the penalty box more often than you'd like. Also, if you've ever wanted to narrate your own sports commentary, NHL 06 offers the chance to create your own customized team and player profiles. That's right! You can relive your hockey dreams as the terrifyingly-named "The Great Skater" or "Goal Crusher." As for the multiplayer capabilities, grab some friends, hit the ice together, and let the trash-talking commence. The game features a variety of game modes; whether you want a casual match, or to hop into a whole season of heart-pounding hockey action, you're covered. Just remember: no one likes a sore loser, so keep the celebrations (and the mockery) to a minimum. Go easy on your buddy who just skated into the boards face-first.
For a PS2 game, NHL 06 has gorgeous graphics that make you feel like you're appreciating the finer details of a hockey rink through a stylish Instagram filter. The player models are nicely detailed-and by nicely I mean you can actually see what kind of terrible haircut your player is rocking during the gameplay. The arenas are rendered beautifully, making sure you can see that one lucky spot where the goalie's mask nearly reflects the crowd's excitement. Player animations are commendable; however, there are moments when it's as if the game forgot that physics exist, especially during those player-falls-on-his-face moments. The crowd? Let's just say they look like they've been stuffed into a blender-popsicle sticks and all. But hey, we're not here to admire the audience. This game built an engaging atmosphere with sounds of cheering and booing, reminiscent of real-life hockey games. You can almost hear your mom telling you to stop screaming at the TV...
NHL 06 embodies everything that is hockey but crammed into the pixelated world of the PS2. From the laughter induced by clumsiness on ice to the satisfaction of scoring the game-winning goal, it keeps you glued to the screen. While some may push it toward the recycling bin filled with sports games, it finds its place as a must-try for indie hockey fans or couch potatoes who appreciate some daring virtual antics. All in all, if you've got friends and a love for the rink, throw on your skates except this time you won't have to worry about sprained ankles. So slap on your best fightin' words and dive into the ice-NHL 06 is waiting to forge your digital legacy!
