Here we go again! Resident Evil 5 breaks forth from the shadows of horror and drags us, kicking and screaming, into a bright and sunny Africa. That's right, nothing says danger like a sunburn and a side of zombies. Prepare yourself for opulent exploration, like a swanky vacation, but instead of swimsuits, you've got weaponry and a strangely uncomfortable partner. And don't worry, we'll try not to trip over the landmines of controversy in this review.
The gameplay pushes you along the paved road of cooperative gameplay; that means you can drag a friend into this disaster. You control Chris Redfield, a guy who could bench press a car, while another player gets to be Sheva Alomar, who I'm sure is equally capable of saving the world while looking fabulous. The game does this nifty thing where you can't run and shoot at the same time. Why? Because who needs mobility when you're being chased by zombies with professional-grade weapons? Can you imagine attempting to outrun a zombie while calculating your next shot? Clearly, they thought 'standing and taking aim will intensify your adrenaline!' While they weren't wrong, it definitely makes an escape scenario feel more like an awkward date.
The graphics are trademark Capcom-stunning and kinda horrifying at the same time. It's like a beautiful sunset, but if the sunset was also a raging volcano. The environments are expansive and filled with enemies and treasures just waiting for you. Your first impression is 'wow, this looks amazing'. The next thought is usually 'oh god, is that a giant monster?' The visual design drags you right into its chaos-definitely a wild ride for your eyeballs. Your head will beg to know why you aren't living in these brightly lit fantastical settings but your heart will remind you that the last thing you saw was a skinless man wielding a grenade launcher.
Resident Evil 5 is a fantastic entry that shook up the horror genre's sleepy approach, throwing in some action for good measure. Critics might raise eyebrows at its lack of traditional survival horror elements, but let's be honest: If I'm going to be chased by a mutant zombie, I'd prefer to do it while teamed up with a pal, preferably one who's good at sharing bullets. Despite the hiccups-like the control scheme and the hot takes on race-the game entertains while keeping you at the edge of your seat. Or couch. Or wherever you play. If you're looking to dive into action alongside a touch of the paranormal-this is your popcorn-filled adventure!
