Introduction

If you ever thought being a pizza delivery man was a walk in the park, then 'Emily Wants to Play' is here to scare you back to reality. Released on PS4 by indie developer Shawn Hitchcock, this survival horror title throws you into the creepy confines of a haunted house where you aren’t just delivering a Hawaiian pizza; you’re delivering yourself back to sanity after facing the spine-chilling antics of little Emily and her dollish friends. Grab yourself a slice of fear, roll up your sleeves, and prepare to sweat because it’s going to be a long night, folks.

Gameplay

'Emily Wants to Play' follows a simple yet anxiety-inducing premise: survive the night, from 11 PM to 6 AM, in a house filled with creepy dolls and a girl who’s not just looking for playdates, but also for a life reset (hint: it’s a ghost story). The pizza delivery man finds himself trapped in the house after a routine delivery goes horribly wrong. As the hours tick by, each hour brings a new challenge as different antagonists appear to play their respective games. From quiet to full-blown horror, each hour introduces various dolls that you must outsmart. For instance, at midnight, Kiki, the porcelain doll, is all about that jump scare life. Just remember: if you hear her giggle, face her until she disappears—think of it as awkward staring contest training. Come 1 AM, meet Mr. Tatters, the clown doll. This one takes the Idle Hands approach; you can’t move around too much, or you’ll be in for a face full of nightmare fuel. If he’s around and you find yourself twitchy, just hold still until he decides to bail. At 2 AM, things get trickier with Chester the ventriloquist dummy, who just wants you to play tag—but trust me, you don’t want to be “it.” As time shifts to 3 AM, things heat up with all the dolls becoming hostile. You'll be juggling the different ways to deal with each doll like it's a horrifying game of hot potato. And, of course, the night cap comes when 4 AM brings Emily herself, and believe me, she means business! If you want your character to survive, you’ll have to muscle through a gauntlet of creepy kids’ games. This repetitive cycle helps you get familiar with the mechanics, which is a blessing and a curse depending on how easily you scare. Most importantly, there’s a whiteboard riddled with misinformation meant to prank you; ignore it at your own risk. Survive until 6 AM, the front door unlocks, and you’re free, unless the dolls have other plans. Gameplay-wise, it's equal parts strategic, intensive, and absolutely terrifying. But don’t fret too much; if you lose, you can just start the last hour over…over and over until your soul crumbles.

Graphics

On the visual side, 'Emily Wants to Play' brings a decent level of graphic engagement despite being an indie game. The environments are designed to be atmospheric and unsettling—you won't find any cutesy graphics here. With the use of Unreal Engine 4, the lighting plays a significant role in building the mood; dim lights can hide monsters or provide the perfect jump scare. The art direction creates an immersive yet claustrophobic experience that fits perfectly within the survival horror genre. Sure, it won’t win any awards for hyper-realistic graphics, but the unsettling doll designs and eerie home settings add just the right amount of terror to the overall gameplay. It’s as if all those childhood fears of dolls come to life have been distilled into a game that highly utilizes shadows and ambient noises to instill dread.

Conclusion

In conclusion, 'Emily Wants to Play' is for any adrenaline junkies or horror enthusiasts looking for a frenzied night of jump scares intertwined with strategic survival gameplay. While it can occasionally lean heavily on jump scares, it pulls off an impressive creepy atmosphere that will keep you glued to your console. It may not be perfect, but it’s certainly a must-try for those daring enough to play through the night. If the thought of pesky dolls and a disturbed little girl doesn't keep you up, I don't know what will! Grab your pizza slice, hit play, and watch your night turn into a haunting ride. Just remember: Emily doesn’t actually want to play…she wants to scare the living bejeezus out of you!
