Ah, Gotham City! Home to vigilantes who dress in black, mysterious organizations that lurk in the shadows, and, evidently, individuals who are really bad at understanding basic street signs. Enter Gotham Knights, the action RPG that lets you take control of Batman's favorite sidekicks after ol' Batty is no longer in the picture (RIP Bruce, we hardly knew ye). Ready to visit Gotham without the big bat? Buckle up, because it’s time to navigate the dark nights with a side of combat and co-op chaos!
Gotham Knights offers an impressive smorgasbord of superheroes for you to take control of: Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood—because who doesn’t want to battle crime as a guy who calls himself Red Hood? Gameplay-wise, it adopts a third-person perspective and focuses primarily on using the unique abilities of each character to punch crime in its metaphorical face. Want to level up? Each hero has distinct traversal skills, which means you can swing (or teleport, thanks to modern tech) all around Gotham to stop ne’er-do-wells, snag collectibles, and freak out pedestrians with impressive parkour moves. Bonus points for clearing missions and leveling up in style, which is basically how you defeat crime while avoiding the post office during tax season. Oh, and did I mention that enemies level up alongside you? It’s like a treadmill of evil; just keep running and praying for divine intervention—or better gear.
Visually, Gotham Knights boasts some pretty slick graphics, and it all runs on Unreal Engine 4—because who doesn’t love a solid 4? However, despite being on the powerful PS5, the game runs at a sticky 30 frames per second. Not quite the smooth ride we were hoping for, but to be fair, Gotham might be doing its best impression of a haunted haunted house. The art design captures the characteristically dark and brooding ambiance of the city beautifully, though the only time you’ll see the sun is when the characters get a tan playing twiddle with NPCs and side missions! But it does have those nighttime drenched visuals that scream, 'Who cares about sleep? Let’s crime-fight until dawn!'
All in all, Gotham Knights is an amalgamation of fun and frustration. It's a game that serves up great co-op action with friends and dives into a compelling narrative centered around those who carry on Batman’s legacy, even if they can’t seem to figure out how to parallel park a Batcycle. It’s a mixed bag—while it may not dethrone the beloved Arkham series, it's still worth a try if you want to explore Gothic architecture, punch bad guys, and complain about loot drops with four of your friends. So grab your masks, slip into something dark, and prepare to save Gotham (or at least try to).
