Introduction

Step aside, Floyd Mayweather, because Knockout Kings 99 is here to show us how virtual boxing is done. Released back in the ancient time of 1998, this game has all the finesse of a toddler's drawing of a cat-cute but definitely not winning any Grammys. Intended for those picky about their buttons (and also their punch mechanics), this game offers an itch that doesn't quite reach the back. But will it be enough to knock you off your couch? Let's dive in and find out.

Gameplay

Picture it: 38 of the biggest boxing legends have come together for a brawl that can only be described as slightly less destructive than your average family Thanksgiving dinner. The game prominently features famous fighters like Muhammad Ali and Oscar De La Hoya, giving you the unique opportunity to knock your friends out in the same way they knock your socks off in a trivia game. Modes range from single-player bouts to reveling in the joy of beating your best mate with the controller, proving once and for all that you can both be friends and despicable enemies in a matter of seconds. Gameplay is deceptively simple and just complicated enough to have you yelling at your screen in frustration-just like your dad while watching a football game. Light and heavy punches, hooks, jabs, and blocking are your primary arsenal, alongside some ridiculous combos that wouldn't even make sense in a real-life boxing match. Yes, you can throw a punch with the finesse of a demented octopus, but timing could be your best friend here-or your greatest enemy. Too bad nobody can tell the difference when you're hammering buttons like it's a '90s arcade.

Graphics

Come for the fighters, stay for the...well, let's be honest, the animations could use some serious protein shakes. Graphics are stuck firmly in the late '90s time capsule. They stayed loyal to the era, with models that look approximately as defined as wet cardboard cutouts. But hey, those radical pixelated fighter representations will take you on a trip down memory lane, roughly filled with nostalgia and a hint of wanting a refund. One might argue they look like they're performing in a Broadway play about boxing, where the props are as exaggerated as the drama itself.

Conclusion

Knockout Kings 99 is like an old friend you haven't seen in years; they're a little worse for wear but remind you of the good times. Unlike a lot of modern fighters, it aims for fun without losing itself in the complex button sequences, much like a five-year-old pursuing the perfect chocolate chip cookie recipe. When it's all said and done, you'll find yourself outside the boxing ring waiting for Knockout Kings 2000-cross your fingers that one has better graphics and, you know, maybe a few less pixels. For now, it's not a heavyweight contender, but sucker punches are always welcome, so step into the ring if you're feeling nostalgic or just really bored. Worst case, you'll have a rather amusing time trading virtual blows with your friends, just to see who can throw punches fast enough to break a controller. If you're feeling generous, throw it a 7 out of 10 for giving you a reason to yell at the TV once again.
