Introduction

If you've ever wanted to raise monsters that seem to have emerged from the wildest dreams (or nightmares) of 8-year-olds, 'Monster Rancher 2' might just be the game for you. Released in 1999, this sequel invites you to become a monster rancher, which I guess is a thing. Your life will revolve around training, fighting, and breeding monsters, all while listening to a toucan complain about your choices. So if you're looking for a virtual pet experience that won't make you question your life choices, stick around.

Gameplay

In 'Monster Rancher 2', you don the invisible hat of a monster trainer-yes, I mean literally no one ever sees you. Your main person is Colt, your assistant, who, let's be real, manages to not only train monsters but also to silently judge your life decisions. Together, you navigate a year-long journey where you participate in various tournaments-think battle royale but with monsters and a touch of anime absurdity. Winning these tournaments gives you the chance to add new types of monsters to your repertoire. If your pet is not evolving, it's probably because you didn't read the training manual which is conveniently wrapped around menu options. Monsters are not just mindless fighters, oh no! They have 'guts'-and that's not just how you feel when you face down a hamster-sized dragon. Guts are the lifeblood of your monsters' moves in combat, and they regenerate like someone who had way too much coffee at the office. Each monster has its own unique moves, and if you're lucky, or perhaps unintentionally sadistic, you might unlock an entirely new monster type by combining them like Pokémon but with actually fewer rules and much more chaos. The training menu is like a buffet for your monsters, filled with all the choices you never knew you needed-train for strength, speed, or even train hard enough so they can maybe leave home and get a job one day. And when you feel your monsters are ready to face the world-or each other-you can send them into tournaments ranging from amateur to 'what on earth have we just witnessed?!'. Winning allows you to climb up the ranks and earn more than just bragging rights, allowing access to higher-level tournaments that might finally make your mom proud (just kidding, she'll still want you to be a doctor).

Graphics

The graphics of 'Monster Rancher 2' are what you might expect from a PlayStation game where the most advanced form of 3D was shaped like a cube. But hey, nostalgia is a funny thing, allowing you to overlook the jagged edges and color palettes that scream 'early 2000s'. Monsters range from the adorable to the absurdly ridiculous. Some look like they raided your childhood toy box, while others seem better suited for a horror film. The battle animations are rudimentary at best, yet somehow, they hold a certain charm that keeps you button-mashing just to see what happens next. Plus, hearing the same sound effect ten times in a row while your monster 'powers up' is both amusing and infuriating-a delightful combo if you're into that kind of thing.

Conclusion

'Monster Rancher 2' is an experience much like fluffy socks on a cold day-comfortable, familiar, and perhaps just a little weird. If you enjoy raising monsters in an often chaotic, sometimes ridiculous manner, this game is for you. It's perfect for those who want a break from all the triple-A blockbusters demanding miles of player effort. Sure, it's got its quirks, and your role in the story feels more like that of the silent observer than an actual hero. Still, it provides endless entertainment, which makes it worth digging out the dusty old console and giving it a spin-just don't let your monsters know you're not actually training for world domination. At the end of the day, would I recommend it? Absolutely, but only if you promise to read the manual first-definitely my top tip. Final score, a solid **8 out of 10**! Grab that memory card and get ready to ranch some monsters!
