Introduction

In a world where football rules supreme, and video game franchises are like that one friend who never knows when to stop talking about their favorite band, we have FIFA 16. Released just in time for your fall couch potato season, this title introduces what could possibly be its greatest innovation yet: female players. Cue the trumpet fanfare and pat yourself on the back, EA-this is a momentous shift towards inclusivity for a series so entrenched in tradition that it might as well be wearing a monocle.

Gameplay

FIFA 16 doesn't mess around with its gameplay, and if you feel lucky, you can show off your football knowledge in Career Mode - management style. Not a fan of managing? You can still indulge in gorgeous graphics, intuitive controls, and a new feature-packed Ultimate Team. It introduces the FUT Draft, where luck is the name of the game and players can draft their ultimate squad in a random pool. Spoiler alert: you will not always end up with Messi, but you will get put through a test regarding the placement of your virtual foot on the controller as you weep over your hastily assembled team. Expect less 'We are the champions' and more 'Why did I ever think I could do this?' when you inevitably get stomped by an 8-year-old online.

Graphics

Graphically, FIFA 16 sits on the throne that its predecessors build around it, but add a few extra pillows for comfort. The animations are smoother than a baby's bottom, and the stadiums look so real you might expect a pitch invasion from the players themselves. Weather effects have graced the game like a spritz of cologne on prom night. Rain bounces off the polished turf, and lighting creates atmosphere just like a mug of hot chocolate during a winter game. But, of course, none of this matters if your free kick goes directly into the wall, leaving you staring dismally at the screen wishing you could teleport back to an age where you played kickball in your neighborhood.

Conclusion

In conclusion, FIFA 16 does what FIFA does best-delivers football in all its pixelated glory while managing to redefine expectations ever so slightly. The inclusion of female players elevates gameplay beyond just 'man against man' and gives everyone from league fans to casual players a chance to kick around some social norms. FIFA 16 may not reinvent the wheel, but it can certainly teach you a thing or two about flexing your digital football muscle. Grab your controller, don your jersey, and prepare to either rise to glory or wallow in defeat, because that's just how the beautiful game rolls.
