Introduction

Imagine being a hero so famous that even in death, you're apparently the VIP of the Underworld. Welcome to Achilles: Legends Untold, the action RPG where you can relive your glory days-behind your own grave. This is a game that throws you right into the action, assuming you're familiar with the great Greek tragedy known as the Trojan War. Spoiler alert: it doesn't end well for Achilles. Spoiler alert two: the game starts with him receiving work from Hades. What a time to be dead, right?

Gameplay

You control Achilles-yes, that Achilles-after he's earned the ultimate death experience ticket and gets to roam Greece again, because apparently, the afterlife has its perks. Quests involve helping Hades, which isn't as glamorous as it sounds. Forget epic battles with legendary foes; you'll mostly be hunting around like a Greek detective, trying to find lost objects or missing gods, all the while fending off some seriously cranky monsters who wouldn't know a good time if it bit them. Combat mechanics follow a Soulslike approach, which makes you feel heroic until you realize you're just a glorified pin cushion for enemies. You'll find you can only attack using combos that are limited by your stamina. It's a balancing act of skill while simultaneously trying not to flail like a headless chicken. However, fear not! By gathering tokens-a currency that feels much like finding spare change in your couch-you can unlock gloriously useful abilities in a skill tree that will make you feel powerful enough to face all your existential crises in one zesty combo attack.

Graphics

Visually, Achilles: Legends Untold has done its homework and grades pretty well. It possesses a blend of ancient Greece's charm and slightly updated graphics that make it look as if the marble statues have sprung to life. Think less 'moldy old amphitheater' and more 'hey, check out my cool sword and awesome shaders!' Each battle scene is vibrant enough to keep your attention, especially as you attempt to comprehend just how many times you've respawned due to being outmaneuvered by a giant scorpion. The character models are detailed, capturing that rugged, brave hero vibe-except when you're face down in a pile of dirt after that aforementioned giant scorpion. Overall, the graphics serve both historical fidelity and devil-may-care flair. It feels like they mixed a history book with a pop-up story for good measure, with just enough drama to remind you that mythological deities are far too busy arguing about their divine egos to answer your calls for help.

Conclusion

Achilles: Legends Untold has aims to be your go-to action RPG while dusting off your Greek mythology knowledge and casually resurrecting something more like a lost interest than a lost hero. Its blend of Soulslike mechanics with questing in a mythological setting is amazing on paper but fumbles on execution like a new player during a boss fight. If you're craving a genre mashup that hits hard yet leaves you in a puddle of 'oh dear, that was unfortunate,' this may just be your jam. Just don't expect to achieve god-like abilities without some serious grinding, epic fails, and perhaps a few existential crises related to your life choices. It's decent if you can roll with the punches-quite literally in this case-so pick up a controller and dive headfirst into your new afterlife gig. Just watch out for the scorpions.
