Introduction

Ah, Tekken! The iconic starting point for the series that put Namco on the fighting game map. A 1994 arcade gem, and then boom! Dropped on the PlayStation in '95, fighting game fans rejoiced. It had a cast of characters, unique moves, graphics that would give your grandmother an existential crisis, and enough button mashing to keep your fingers sore for weeks. Let's dive into the nitty-gritty of this classic as we throw some punches, catch some kicks, and probably get knocked out a few times along the way.

Gameplay

In Tekken, players can take control of one of eight fighters, all with varying backstories and ludicrous fighting styles-think Bruce Lee if he had a pet panda. The unique control scheme, featuring a button for each limb, meant players could dish out the pain in a multitude of ways (just don't accidentally hit your mom's coffee mug while practicing your combos). One-on-one bouts are the bread and butter of the game, with every match set to a two-round format unless you're a masochist and want to up the rounds to five. Each arena features grand vistas-from Angkor Wat to something vaguely resembling a Chicago alley-creating the illusion that you've left your living room while still wearing pajamas. But it's not just about moving left and right; knowing when to hit high, low, or mid can mean the difference between sweet victory and a kick to your ego. The timer countdown adds pressure, letting you know that your fate hinges on your ability to press buttons faster than a kid at an arcade fighting over the last token.

Graphics

Graphics in Tekken? Oh boy, let's just say they were revolutionary for the time. The 3D polygonal characters are certainly... a product of their 90s environment. Sure, they might look like a PS1 console decided to take a stroll through a blocky collage of colors, but hey, they were groundbreaking! Every fighter boasted various unique, and at times outright bonkers, designs that had players yelling, "Why does that panda have such good martial arts?" This rudimentary yet charming aesthetic, paired with bold colors and creative character animations, left its mark on many gamers who were less picky about their graphics and more focused on who could throw the best haymaker. Fast forward to today, and we might view it as an ugly duckling, but back then, it was like an ugly duckling that just jumped off a mountain and decided to join an ancient martial arts tournament!

Conclusion

Tekken has evolved, and while the combat system has had over two decades to flesh out sophisticated combos and jaw-dropping visuals, the foundation laid by this classic remains ever so strong. The characters, storylines, and chaotic fighting style have only gotten better with time, but that doesn't diminish the nostalgia that players feel when they boot this retro classic up. Giving Tekken a score? How about a solid 9 out of 10, as it kicked off a fighting franchise that has stood the test of time. You may find the graphics laughable now, but at the end of the day, it's about the spirit of competition, the skill in each match, and still swearing at your friends after losing to someone who knows how to spam. You can never go wrong with a good fight. Just remember to keep your significant other's coffee mug out of reach while you're at it!
